What Earth will they find?

We’re all wondering what the Colonial fleet will find if and when they get to Earth at the end of Season Four of Battlestar Galactica. I think they will reach Earth in the last episode and find the Cylons already here. The biggest question mark in my mind is “when” they will arrive: ancient past, recent past, now or future? Can’t wait to find out.
The 13th Colony 
Personally I’d love to see Galactica discover the Earth as described in StarChild, a novel by Jim G. Styles–A Galactics/StarChild cross-over story involving however, the Galactica as it was in the old series (don’t like the new).
In fact I’d love to join an on-line Battlestar Galactica role-playing group where I could play a character from the Earth in StarChild living incognito aboard Galactica trying to steer them in the right direction. A club based on the original Galactica universe, not the new series. Even a local meeting group involving role-play would be fine.
In fact, if I could find out how, I’d love to write a Galactica/StarChild cross-over novel.
My guess is the Earth they find is similar to the one Charleton Heston found in Planet of the Apes.
Which means Season Five is about explaining why Earth ended up like that?
Did the 12 colonies leave Earth to escape a Mutually Assured Destruction as outlined by scientist Helen Caldicott twenty years ago?
