The Shape of Things to Come

December 1, 2010

The producers of Caprica had a fairly good idea from the start that their show would be a tough sell. The ending of their first season, which has turned out to be their last, proves they weren’t really expecting to get a second season after all. Full of action and surprises, Caprica comes to an explosive conclusion, with an epilogue that will blow you away. The fans get far more closure than they might have expected, but this episode is hardly a showcase for the high calibre acting that has distinguished the series so far. At least one major character is unseen.

You didn’t really expect Apotheosis to be as nice and shiny as Clarice told you, did you?

Here Be Dragons, Literally

November 23, 2010

by spacepug

Plenty happened on the penultimate episode of Caprica, titled “Here Be Dragons” including, you guessed it, dragons.  They delivered a high body count and some unexpected twists, but it felt like true characterization was sacrificed in favour of a blistering pace.  Not my favourite episode by any means.

The following is a recap and review and therefore CONTAINS SPOILERS.

Heaven in a Holoband

November 17, 2010

by spacepug

For an episode ostensibly about robots, there was an awful lot of girl power on display in “The Heavens Will Rise,” the latest episode of Caprica, directed by Michael Nankin.  Our Avenging Angels are still world-building.  Clarice is still scheming. Amanda makes a key move. Evelyn’s pulling strings. We meet the lovely and dangerous Fidelia.  But there is one woman at the heart of the story…Lacy Rand.

Zoe may have been the apple of Clarice’s eye, but Lacy is the chosen one.  Like Starbuck before her, we are watching this brave young woman be forged into a leader.  The biggest regret I have about Caprica’s cancellation is that we won’t get to see her truly come into her own, but it’s clear we’re going to see her get well enough on her way.

Frakkin’ Eh (A)

November 2, 2010

by @spacepug

I love being Canadian.  I wear the flag proudly.  But even I wondered at today’s sudden announcement that SyFy Channel was going to allow Canada’s Space Channel to air the remaining “Final Five” episodes of Caprica.  Honestly, Canada doesn’t register on SyFy’s priorities, anywhere.  So, why?  Because SyFy gets to have their cake and eat it too.  They can cancel a poorly rated show and suffer no harm to their ratings during the all-important November sweeps, all the while garnering positive buzz from Canadian bloggers like myself who loved the new episode.  Win, win.  And I will happily be used.

This week’s episode “Blowback” was what I’ve been waiting for, a character-driven action piece with bold choices and a quick pace.  Grade A (or Eh, if you’re from Toronto).

Return to the Soil

October 20, 2010

by spacepug

Remember that phrase brides talk about before weddings, “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?  This week’s episode of Caprica, Things We Lock Away, had all of them: echoes of the old Roman Empire, a reference to new social media fad Twitter, a glaringly prominent theme borrowed from Battlestar Galactica, and one of the most powerful scenes on the show to date…which left this blogger very blue indeed.

What follows after the cut is a recap and review, and therefore contains SPOILERS.

Taking Care of Business

October 12, 2010

By spacepug

“Have you ever NOT frakked up something in your life, Lacy?”

It’s an important question, asked early on in Caprica’s latest episode, “Retribution.”  When we first met Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) in the pilot, she didn’t go through with her part of Zoe’s flight to Gemenon and that decision saved her life.  She fails to follow through on something important in this episode and like the title implies, there are serious consequences.

Apotheosis Defined

October 5, 2010

by spacepug

Caprica’s back, and first off, can we dispense with the silly numbering and just say the second half of Caprica Season 1, rather than 1.5? That is the end of my complaints, really. Caprica returned this week with Unvanquished, a solid, fast-paced episode directed by star Eric Stoltz (Daniel Graystone). After weak ratings and an uncertain future, Caprica needed a strong return to win back the fans after the hiatus and give it any hope of a second season. Both the show and the fans play parts in that equation, but this episode delivered nicely on it’s end of the bargain.  Not the least of which, it gave us our first glimpse of one of the other colonies.

Caprica: Know Thy Enemy

March 6, 2010

by Wyrdwritere

“And this is the little box I get to tick when I have destroyed your life.”

False pretenses, and dire consequences for heedless, reckless, passionate actions abound in the latest installment of Caprica.  Spoilers abound, too, so don’t click the link if you don’t want them.

New Cap City

New Cap City, digital and lawless

Caprica cranked it up a notch this week, showing us a whole new world, and surprising depth to a character who should have very little.  Hold on to your fedoras, more after the chop.

Caprica episode 4: Gravedancing

February 22, 2010

Backstage at the Baxter Sarno show

In this episode, nothing goes as planned.

by Millari

This week’s Caprica episode, “Gravedancing” was one of plans thwarted and threats averted or recanted, and concerned itself with the questions of grief and responsibility, often with disturbing answers.

This review contains SPOILERS:
